Green Building with Sterritt Lumber
Since 1841, F.D. Sterritt Lumber Company has been serving the building materials industry the right way. As times have progressed, and technology has drastically changed the way we harvest building materials, F.D. Sterritt Lumber felt the need to adapt as well. Out of our deep respect for the environment, Sterritt Lumber started stocking FSC -certified lumber in 2003, after we saw a growing trend involving sustainability. We found solace in the fact that the certification comes from an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Through our commitment to the FSC, we keep over $1,000,000 worth of FSC certified lumber on the ground at all times. It is an incredibly encouraging time, as industry leaders are sourcing and supplying more certified wood by the day, thanks to LEED continuing to be one of the largest driver of FSC wood products.

Fifteen years ago, Sterritt Lumber embarked on its newest venture: green building. We became FSC (Forest Stewardship Council ) chain of custody certified to distribute, re-manufacture, pressure and fire treat FSC certified wood products. Sterritt has gained many accolades for this distinction including being named “Best of Boston” for 2009 by the Best of Boston Home Magazine for the Best Eco-Friendly Flooring Category. The professionals at Sterritt are determined to be a continued industry leader in preserving our environment. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC ) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way. Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certification as a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistent with FSC standards. Independent, certification organizations are accredited by FSC to carry out assessments of forest management to determine if standards have been met. These organizations also verify that companies claiming to sell FSC certified products have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources. This chain of custody certification assures that consumers can trust the FSC label. Sterritt Lumber is a certified chain of custody supplier, distributor, and re-manufacturer of FSC wood products. Here is a summary of some of the points the FSC requires in its full chain of custody. Many of the points listed below will
